I like Steiner because he’s hot and he’s friendly.
Haha. No, not really. I don’t think Steiner would have been half as much fun if he were hot or friendly in the game. Here are my real reasons for liking Steiner:
What I like about Steiner is his complexity. The man is more than the stereotypical shallow good-looking character wanting to save the princess (I’m not putting down Link OR Mario, mind you ;).) from evil. He’s a character with issues, and that’s what makes him cool. He’s unique. :)
He’s also funny. Steiner’s naivety and his twisted perception of life kept me laughing, and his interaction with Zidane was hilarious. Part of the reason I kept playing the game was to see what Steiner would say next.
Lastly, he’s strong. Steiner is most likely the strongest character in the game, and I know that he’s the reason I made it through FFIX. His weapons were priceless in moments of difficulty, and those Steiner-Vivi combos kicked ass. There were battles where I let Garnet and Zidane die while I used all my potions on Vivi and Steiner because they were the strongest and I knew that they could get the job done. And they did. :) You don’t want to get in between Steiner and that sword. Ask a random troll or snake-thing in the game.
Steiner’s reactions and feelings were real, unlike Zidane teaching Garnet how to not walk and talk like a princess (Bleh.), and I know this is overused on shrines, but while playing the game I felt like I could really relate to his character, his worries, and his reactions to things.
